365 days is a long time, but in reality, it’s only been 12.

In just 12 days, we’ve created a community that comes together every month despite busy lives and personal obstacles to write, laugh, and enjoy each other’s company.

In just 12 days, we’ve grown the Creative Writing Club into what it is—and how wonderful it is, at that.

To celebrate our one-year anniversary, we teamed up with Michelle, owner of Study Bubble Stationery, to bring the studio and Salt Lake, our first-ever community-storytelling project: Stories of Salt Lake.

Guests took to a notebook with a pen and paper or typed away in their Notes app, telling a true story from their life. From broken bones and traveling to best days and childhood pets, each story was sealed with wax before being delivered to Little Libraries in Salt Lake, Sugarhouse, Murray, and Midvale.

Each envelope got its own little library, waiting for some lucky person in that area to come across it.

Guests got free stationery items and stickers from the Creative Writing Club, Study Bubble Stationery, and The Block, with complimentary food and birthday beignets gifted by Laziz Kitchen.

Stories of Salt Lake - Community Writing Project

We want to connect our local community together through ordinary and relatable stories from people around Salt Lake.

Guests are welcome to stop by the studio and anonymously write or print a true personal story and seal it in wax. All envelopes will be delivered to little libraries around Salt Lake County.

$10 covers all supplies needed, with the option to browse and enjoy stationery freebies.

Seating inside the studio is first-come, first-served.

For those of you who weren’t able to make it, here’s how it went:

Guests arrived at the studio between 7 and 8, with an open seat waiting for them and written instructions to getting started. On one end of the studio, we had supplies, magazines, flyers, scissors, etc., and on the other, we had a fresh batch of churros from the restaurant next door with an assortment of sauces.

People caught up, wrote, and started the activity at their own pace until eventually, it was so loud with laughter it was hard to hear the music–which inevitably turned into a Spotify jam.

We cut, glued, snacked, and were merry while everyone created unique collages that reflected their own visions of this summer. We finished our vision boards around 9PM and shared them with one another before packing up and heading home.

This month was a hands-on creative writing activity. Members turned book pages into poems, short stories, funny reads, and creative scenes with blackout poetry.

It was also a special occasion, as we celebrated Mariah’s birthday (owner of The Block) with raspberry chocolate cake from my partner’s bakery.

After the activity, the studio moved into social hour as everyone continued sharing ideas, talking, and spending time together until 9PM as usual.

We’re grateful for our growing creative community, and we look forward to seeing everyone next month.

What is Blackout Poetry?

A creative writing exercise that uses an existing page of text, where selected words are kept and the rest is blocked out using paint, tape, or markers.

Blackout poetry exercises creativity, observation, and attention to detail, usually proving more challenging than expected.

As we waited for everyone to arrive, we ordered fries with a monstrous amount of sauce from Laziz next door and wrote, talked quietly, and caught up from last month.

By 7:30, we were ready to play an original writing game called Family Inheritance, designed to bring out fun, imaginative, and even absurd responses from our group. After each prompt, everyone traded silently with others and marked their favorites with laughs and good-noodle star stickers.

We concluded the activity with a journal-style prompt that tied the night’s lesson back to our personal lives.

From there, we opened into social hour, where everyone hung out until 9PM as normal.

We’re grateful for our creative members, and we look forward to seeing you in May!

Everyone arrived at their own time thanks to our self-start process–and of course, because wizards are never late.

For the first hour, we wrote short fairy tales with guide cards to get started or structure our stories if needed. Sitting down to write something from scratch can feel intimidating, boring, or overwhelming, especially when it’s not something people do regularly anymore. So, seeing pages full of writing by the end of our session was a delight. Some people were even able to finish their stories entirely!

At 8PM we crowned a winner for a game everyone played unbeknownst to them. Wizard Kenny was ultimately awarded the wizard hat for their energy, creativity, and welcoming demeanor as one of our newest members.

From there, we transitioned into social hour, where everyone was quick to introduce themselves, share their stories, discuss their characters, writing, D&D, and more while enjoying a pita dip platter and veggie spread as refreshments.

The night wrapped up at 9:00, and I was left with a reminder of why this club exists. Writing is a niche hobby, and having a place to come together and talk about stories, characters, poetry, and imagination with like-minded people is important, and it’s evident in the experiences we create together every month.

My heart felt very full looking around the room and seeing people connect over the things they love.

Members arrived throughout the evening while we set the mood and got into a writing headspace—which naturally turned into conversation between new friends.

We moved into our group activity at 7:30 where each person wrote kind messages on fortune-cookie-sized scrolls, and after about 30 minutes, each table had written enough to be given their own mini corked glass bottles. Tables traded their basket of scrolls to quite literally offer their words of kindness to strangers around the room.

Alongside a ‘jar of hearts’, guest received a single rose to commemorate Valentine’s in whatever way they choose to celebrate, prepared by Dakotah Bitney, as always. The rest of the evening was filled with discussion, snacks, writing, tarot, Valentine making, and dog petting.

I swear these nights feel like there’s some wizardly magic hidden under the tables or something.

This Valentine’s weekend, @girlsdothework and @herflowslc are hosting a Valentine’s party for seniors in a local assisted living community. The CWC is happy to donate letters, notes, and stories for our seniors to read and enjoy on behalf of our members and writing community.

Submissions are anonymous and accepted through a Google Form.

Submissions can be:

• Short, traditional Valentine notes

• Appreciative, heartfelt, or funny messages

• Personal or fictional short stories that evoke positive feelings

• Poems or other creative writing

Our goal is to collect 50 submissions.

You do not need to be a club member or attend events to participate, this is open to anyone who wants to be part of a wholesome community effort.

Submissions will be accepted through February 8.

We will not be hosting a club night in January to recognize the holiday and give everyone space to spend time with loved ones while preparing for the year ahead.

With that said, our free Christmas event was filled with conversation, laughter, and new faces. We’re grateful to everyone who chose to join us, especially an exceptional writing professor who generously shared her thoughts and expertise throughout the night.

Hello everyone, and happy November!

Last night was a wholesome experience that kicked off the month of gratitude. We enjoyed baked goods from Honey Bee Home Bakery, and by the end of the night, nothing was left from the pumpkin chocolate chip cookies, butterscotch pear bundts, and large container of hot cocoa I was thankful to carry back to my car empty.

One of my favorite parts of hosting the CWC is decorating each table to match the seasonal atmosphere, and this month had no limit of satisfaction. Candles, fall leaves, and themed bouquets by Dakotah Bitney, arranged inside pumpkins as stunning centerpieces made the entire studio feel warm and cozy.

We also welcomed four new club members and wrote around twenty heartfelt letters — with three officially dropped off for snail mail this morning. The evening was filled with laughter, conversation, a few wholesome tears, and an ocean of love.

For those who couldn’t attend, I’ve included the letter-writing template below so you can make your own letters from home.

Our third club night was such a success, and our biggest one yet.

Each month, I’m blown away by how this community continues to grow in an intentional and genuine way. New faces show up, familiar ones return, and together we fill the room with conversation and creativity. It’s a pleasure to host and lead these workshops for the creative writers of Salt Lake City, to sit beside people who’re eager to write, listen, and share (shout out to those who did!)

Every event reminds me how special this community and space are becoming.

I also want to give a huge thank-you to my friend (and fellow club member) Dakotah, who created beautifully themed bouquets for each table to enjoy and take home at the end of the evening if desired. You’ll be seeing more of her arrangements at future club nights, and potentially other local vendors as well—which might also mean pop-up CWC collabs.

As for next month, I’m excited to tell you that we will be taking a creative approach to the gratitude season by doing handwritten, wax-sealed letters to friends and family—stamps included. Guests will write letters to loved ones, choose their color of premium velvet envelope, and seal it with their choice of wax color and stamp design.

Guests can leave sealed letters to be sent off or take them home. We will be working with classical materials and live flame, so this is an 18+ event as normal.
